This is the Official Royal Mint medallion issued to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887. Silver, 77mm diameter, 221.5 gms., Mintage of only 2289 pieces, struck in high relief. British Historical Medals # 3219

The medal was engraved by L. C. Wyon after the portrait bust of Sir J. E. Boehm and the reverse design of Sir Frederick Leighton. the reverse shows a figure representing the British Empire enthroned with the sea as background. The other figures represent Commerce, The genius of Electricity and Steam, Industry and Agriculture, Science and Letters and Art. The shields below bear the names of the 5 continents over which the British Empire extends.
