The Pynchon House was built in 1660 by Major John Pynchon, son of the city's founder. It earned the name "The Old Fort" when the town's residents took refuge inside from an Indian attack. It's sturdy brick walls provided protection when all the other wooden dwellings in town were destroyed by fire. Bolen's medal commemorates the 50th anniversary of the demolition of the building.
A PCGS-66 example sold for $408 in the Stacks November 2021 sale, lot 10246. The example pictured is from Bolen's personal collection and is edge lettered "B". It sold for $840 in the Stacks June 2022 Sale, lot 4042.
