JAB-26 JEFFERSON MEDAL Copper
|
25mm - 14 struck by Bolen
The dies were cut in 1867 and traded to Kline in 1872. They are currently in the ANS collection.
Bolen struck 14 examples in Copper. Kline also struck a few examples in this metal. It is fairly easy to tell the restrikes from the originals. The originals are 2.2 to 3.0 mm thick. The restrikes are only 1.5 to 2.0 mm in thickness.
The reverse quote is from Jefferson's first inaugural address delivered on March 4, 1801 and summarizes his view on what the role of government and his administration ought to be.
A gem Uncirculated example brought $402 in the January 2011 Stacks Auction, lot 6620. A MS-63 example brought $651 in the December 2012 Hayden sale, lot 952. A NGC-66 example was sold for $383 by CWTGUY on EBAY in May of 2014.
