"This medal of Louis XII … is one of the milestones in French medallic art. Commissioned by the city of Lyon on March 18, 1499, it was the collective effort of a small group of local artists who, under the influence of the Italians, helped to introduce medalmaking into France. The modeling was done by Nicolas Leclerc and Jean de Saint-Priest, while the casting was entrusted to Jean Lepere, his brother Colin, and an unidentified founder. Nicolas Leclerc was a master engraver and mason active in Lyon from 1487 to 1507. Jean de Saint-Priest, also a master engraver, lived in Lyon from 1490 to 1516. The Lepere brothers were the sons of the goldsmith Louis Lepere (died 1500), and were goldsmiths themselves."
