SOM#102, Edward Fenno Hoffman III, Winnie the Pooh - Alice in Wonderland, 1980

Bronze, 73 mm, 223 g

Numbers Issued: 750 Bronze

FROM THE ARTIST

While my three children were growing up, I read aloud to them and became very familiar with the books, “Winnie the Pooh” and “Alice in Wonderland.” There is something of the make-believe in these subjects that is beguiling and universal in their appeal that lead me to use them in this medal for the Society of Medalists. They are also the subject of a sculpture commission I executed for the Children’s Wing of the Hanover, Pa. Public Library.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

EDWARD FENNO HOFFMAN, III, was born in Philadelphia Pa. and his credentials read as a veritable Who’s Who (in which he is listed). While a student at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts he studied with Walker Hancock, Harry Rosin and Charles Rudy. A former studio assistant of Paul Manship, he was also sculptor in residence at the Henry Clews Memorial Art Foundation at La Napoule in southern France. A former Vice-President of the national Sculpture Society, Hoffman is recipient of the society’s prestigious Hexter Prize as well as Gold Medal of Honor, National Academy of Design, Watrous Gold Medal, National Academy of Design, and other awards too numerous to mention. His works are in the permanent collection of museums, colleges, universities, libraries and in private collections in this country and abroad.
