NATURAL WORLD by Edward R. Grove

50th ANNIVERSARY SECOND PLACE WINNER

From the Artist

The theme chosen for the competition was "The Natural World". To me, this suggested a sampling of the infinite patterns, shapes and textures in the world about us -- from the commonplace to the exotic: raindrops and a mountain range; an eagle and a snail; a fish from the Pacific and the ubiquitous Monarch butterfly; a murex shell and an iris in full bloom; an elk and an oakleaf; a rainbow arching to the horizon and, finally -- the frozen poetry of a snowflake.

Rendering the design in both relief and intaglio helped to achieve an appropriate variety of effects and textures.

The reverse, commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Society of Medalists, seemed to be the perfect opportunity to list the one hundred and one American sculptors commissioned by the Society since its inception in 1930. I arranged the names in actual sequence, except for that of Marcel Jovine, whose Bicentennial Medal was an extra issue for the Society in 1976. The letters and numerals, totalling more than 700, were carved entirely in the negative stage, then surfaced and refined in the final positive plaster.

Executing this "honor roll" was difficult and demanding, but it was also a rewarding experience; I felt not only closer to my fellow-sculptors than ever before, but also realized that we had all become part of the history of medallic art in America.

About the Sculptor, Edward R. Grove

This was the most intricate of the ninety-four coins and medals on which his work has appeared. His commissioned work in other media has included a 400 sq. ft. oil-on-tempera mural, designed and executed with his sculptor-wife, Jean Donner Grove, ANA, NSS, three etchhings for Washington Cathedral and more than 400 portraits in oil, pastel, bas-relief and steel engraving.

Grove was born in West Virginia and now lives and works at "Sea-Lake" in West Palm Beach, Fla. He was employed by the US Treasury Dept. as a banknote portrait engraver at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington and later as a sculptor-engraver at the US Mint in Philadelphia.

In the medallic field, his awards include the Lindsey Morris Memorial Prize, 1967, NSS; the ANA Sculptor of the Year Award, 1969 and Louis Bennett Memorial Prize, 1971, NSS. In a variety of media, his works have been shown in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, New Orleans, Washington, Philadelphia, Cracow and Budapest and are represented in the permanent collections of Art, Carnegie Institute, Smithsonian Institution, Coventry Cathedral, Museum of Medallic Art, Breslau, Poland and the Imperial Palace, Tokyo.

Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Knights of Malta; and a member of Mensa, Amer. Numismatic Ass'n. and TAMS.
