SOM#025, Janet Decoux, Thou Sluggard - Go to the Ant Consider Her Ways and Be Wise, 1942

“Go to the ant, thou sluggard;
Consider her ways, and be wise:
Which having no chief,
Overseer, or ruler,
Provideth her meat in the summer
And gathereth her food in the harvest.
How long wilt thou sleep, O Sluggard?
When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?
Yet a little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to sleep:
So shall thy poverty come as a robber,
And thy want as an armed man.”
What a prophecy, challenge and clear call rolls and roars in this ancient Proverb. We have all heard the sound, here is the voice, and here are the words. It has come through all the centuries to speak to us now as though it were written this day.
On the medal, the sluggard lies asleep beneath a tree at the noon tide. The sun is high, but he sleeps on with his companion the snail.
On the reverse I have used the character of the soldier ant. This was not premeditated and seems rather prophetic in the light of what has happened.
The organization of an any colony is so marvelous that man seems clumsy and aimless in comparison. We fight and die to maintain that which to them is the simple direct working of a society. There is a profound lesson to learn, so profound that it can only be grasped when the necessity for life and survival becomes completely conscious to the civilized world.
There have been three words used to describe the characteristics of the ant: they are, INDUSTRY, FORESIGHT, and COOPERATION. Do these ring with familiarity? I think they do, to each and every one of us.
