SOM#094, Anthony Notaro, Pilgrims Are We All - Mayflower, 1976
From the collection of John Birks

Numbers Issued: 1,000 Bronze, 140 Silver

FROM THE ARTIST

To design a Pilgrim family for this medal, I drew from my own experience. I remember the day we landed at Battery Park in 1922. The very thought of it became my model. For instance, the boy in the medal is a representation of myself, with high button collar coat still in use at the time. There’s my mother with her kerchief, and my little brother with his hooded cape, and my father leading the way.

The ship of the Pilgrims was the Mayflower, ours was the Dante Alighieri. both ships were similar – carrying people from a world they knew to a strange land in quest for something better. It is this thought that has made me realize what the original Pilgrims must have gone through and why they were thankful for the bounty and opportunity they found here. This medal is dedicated to all brave immigrants who came to build a great new country.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Anthony Notaro won a statewide design competition in 1964 for the medal honoring New Jersey’s tercentenary of settlement. Since that time he has done dozens of medals, including New York University Hall of Fame and Florists’ Telegraph Delivery among others. His most prominent media is bronze, but he is equally known for his marble and wood carvings.

He was born in Italy in 1915 and is the seven-year-old boy depicted in the immigrant family for this Society medal. He studied under Harry Lewis Raul, Hans Schuler and William Mark Simpson and worked in the studio of Malvina Hoffman. He taught at the Edgewood School in Greenwich, Connecticut and later at the Academy of Art in Newark.

He is a fellow of the National Sculpture Society, a member of the Allied Artists of America, the American Artists Professional League, and others. He has received numerous prizes, the most recent of which is the 1976 John Spring Art Founder Award of the National Sculpture Society.
