SOM#078, Terry Iles, Medical Research - Spider and Web, 1968

Numbers Issued: 809 Bronze

From The Artist

Research -- the eternal quest for answers to the many mysteries of this universe. The never-ending search for answers to the medical ills which beset us. This medal has been designed by the artist to show the concentration and dedication on the one hand, epitomized by the bold, strong figure peering through the microscope, and the patience and persistence, analogized by the spider and its web, on the other.

Most of us are aware of the age old saying, as applied to the spider, "if at first you don't succeed, try, try and try again." The orb web as used on the reverse is a highly refined device for snaring insects, as science is used for gathering facts. Scientific method is the product of millenia of thought, as the orb web is of aeons of evolution of spiders' webs -- each being the best yet devised for its particular purpose.

A scientific theory is built up, fact by fact, as the web is built up, thread by thread. When the theory proves inadequate, it is altered or abandoned as the web is repaired or replaced when damaged in use. The scientist probes one possibility after another until at length he arrives at a fact or an insight, just as the spider sends out thread after thread until at length one holds fast and becomes the suspension cable of the web. The scientist builds upon his fact, as the spider upon his web line.

About The Artist

Terry Iles spent her very early life in Morayshire, Scotland. During her schooling she showed no promise as an artist, but after losing her husband in 1940, she was appointed a Commander of the Women's Junior Air Corps, and it was as such that she made her first visit to America, in a convoy of 60 Liberty ships before the war was over.

Always feeling the need to create, but never being in a qualifying position, she thought the freedom of America would be the right place for her three children and herself. During the 12 years which followed there was still no time to become a sculptor, which is what she had always wanted.

Finally came the time of the independence of her children and during the year of winding up the business she had conducted in America she studied in the evenings at the National Academy School under Joseph Kiselewski, NA, and other academicians. She works in many media, including direct carving in marble. However, she has concentrated on portrait busts and reliefs, as well as some medals, including the Buffalo Bill and the Esther Hobart Morris Medal for the State of Wyoming. She was awarded the National Sculpture Society's Bronze medal for her free standing figure of "Nereid", and the National Academy's Dessie Greer Award for her bust of Mr. Kiselewski. Honorable mentions include one from the Fine Arts Museum of Springfield, Mass., for her portrait bust of Julian Clarence Levi. Her works are also in private collections.

She is a member of the National Sculpture Society.
