FROM THE ARTIST
Music has always been the most powerful of the Arts for me. After my wife introduced me to George Balanchine's Ballets nine years ago, I have learned to watch the music through the dance. In this way, Mr. Balanchine taught me to appreciate the 20th century composers as much as the Baroques, Romantics and Impressionists.
Balachine's dances and dancers have become so much a part of my life that whenever I hear the music, I see his dancers.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Carter Jones, born of an American artist father and a Parisienne mother, was destined to be an artist ... or at least to have a very strong artistic flair. His heritage showed itself at an early age.
He studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts. It was at this last location that he was handed a piece of clay and, as he put it, "... decided to drop the paint brush."
After earning a number of scholastic awards, Carter Jones moved to Paris to study his craft and paint portraits. Upon returning to the U.S., his owrk -- especially sculpture -- was so refined that he was accepted into the National Sculpture Society (one of its youngest members ever), and received recognition as an eminent sculptor.
In addition to producing twenty-six pieces for Royal Doulton, Mr. Jones has been commissioned for fifteen portrait sculptures done in lay, stone, plaster and copper. He has designed and executed thirty-five medallions and coins for various mints and associations including the Medallic Art Company, The Lincoln Mint and the Judaic Heritage Society. His work was exhibited in 1982 at the American Numismatic Museum in New York City.
A resident of New York, Mr. Jones is President of the American Sculpture Association.
