JAB-23 SPRINGFIELD ANTIQUARIANS Tin
28mm - 1 struck by Bolen

The dies were cut in 1866 and sold to J.W. Kline in 1872. They are not part of the ANS collection and are currently unaccounted for.

The Springfield Antiquarians are presumed to have been nothing more than a group of Bolen's friends that shared a common interest in collecting. In addition to collecting coins and medals, most of the Antiquarians were avid book collectors.

This variety in Tin is not unique. Kline issued a small number of restrikes. I am aware of the existance of at least five different pieces. The most recent auction appearance was in a January 2015 Hayden sale, where an AU example sold for $297, lot 641. A choice Uncirculated example sold for $403 in a January 2011 Stacks auction, lot 6611.
